Course description

The course will introduce students to the basic principles and the economic foundations of policy analysis with respect to agricultural issues. The emphasis is given to the concepts and the tools required for policy analysis in agricultural economics. The basic topics discussed during the lectures involve: principles of supply and demand in the agricultural sector, estimation of demand and supply elasticities, producer theory, price distortions of policy interventions, market equilibrium, agricultural policy analysis: cross national context and the CAP.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester, the students should be able to:

  • Understand the basic principles of Agricultural Economics and to also comprehend the different characteristics of the various agricultural sectors
  • Be familiar with the contemporary issues and challenges faced in the agricultural sectors of advanced countries
  • Have a deeper understanding of the way economic theory can be applied to analyse policy problems related to the agricultural sector
  • Be able to critically assess policy interventions in the agricultural economy
  • Better understand and evaluate problems and challenges in the agricultural sector of Greece
